What is a church? The word church comes from the Greek word, ekklesia (ek-klaysee-ah) meaning assembly. Many believe the church to be a place, but the Word of God speaks of the church as much more than a building; it is the body of Christ, both universally and locally, both presently and for all eternity.The church is referred to as "the body of Christ" (Ephesians 1:23); "the bride of Christ" (Revelation 21:9), the building of God" (Ephesians 2:21); "the temple of God" (1 Corinthians 3:16), "the family of God" (Ephesians 3:15); and "the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10).
The word "church" is used most frequently in the New Testament in the context of a local body of believers and the life within as illustrated by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.
